Why I Joined the Family Insurance Agency

This past year I’ve joined my dad in the insurance agency he built from the ground up, Martin & Associates.

When I tell people what I do, they usually respond with a confused look on their face. People don’t understand how or why I would work in such a boring industry.

But, I get it.

We all know there is not much glamour in being an insurance agent and people often feel that insurance agents are just pushy sales people looking to make a quick buck. Agents get stereotyped but oftentimes for a justified reason. Many of those in the industry actually are just looking for that next sale, even if the product isn’t suited for the client. When people hear the words insurance agent they usually have a negative connotation.

So why not go and try out something else instead of working in the family insurance agency?

Here’s why!

Started From The Bottom

My dad’s business has brought our family a long way.

Growing up, my family didn’t have a lot. Although we lived in a nice quiet neighborhood, for a while there was eight of us living in a two bedroom condo (my grandparents, parents, sister, two brothers and I). It was a tight fit. I slept on thick burgundy camping mats we bought at Costco with my brothers in our living room until I was 13 years old. It was never a big deal and was actually quite fun at times but our living situation wasn’t ideal for a family with three growing teenage boys. We lived simple childhoods and my parents did a great job of making it fun but looking back, we didn’t come from very much.

To provide for the family, my dad was always working and many times coming home late after a day full of appointments. He had a home office and I remember he was on the phone constantly trying to build his business. Anytime us kids started getting loud while he was on the phone, he would start glaring back at us and snap his fingers. As you can guess, it’s difficult to seem professional when you got kids yelling in the background. He was always hard at work and striving for success.

Through years and years of dedication to his business my dad was eventually able to purchase a 4 bedroom single family home in 2004 for our family. It was a huge accomplishment and it gave us kids a space of our own. It was an exciting time!

This business has allowed my dad to build his financial successes. To see where we were and what my dad has been able to provide for the family has been one of the major factors in me joining the business.

Continuing the Legacy

For close to 30 years, my dad has been doing this whole insurance thing. Over that time he has worked with over 1,200 clients. Mostly Medicare clients who are looking for health insurance for their retirement years after turning 65 or losing their group coverage. Medicare can be an extremely confusing topic and our service is able to shed some light on the matter by providing objective information and at no cost to our clients. I believe my dad has created his legacy by helping the community and providing a valuable service to help protect people’s health and wealth.

He has also created work and jobs through his business which has provided income for the agents, support staff and also for myself. I believe it is up to entrepreneurs like my dad to build businesses that can employ people and get Americans back to work.

Making a difference in his client’s and staff’s lives has been part of the legacy that my dad has built. Down the line it is my hope to continue that legacy and to do my best to provide even more for our staff, the community and the nation.

Helping Our Community

We have all experienced how amazing it feels to help another human out. It feels good to give to the poor, to hold the door open for someone, to buy a drink for the person behind you in line at Starbucks or to just make a difference in someone’s life.

That feeling is what I get everytime I meet with a new client. The knowledge and experience I have and will continue to recieve has provided me with an opportunity to make life just a little bit easier for my clients.

The Medicare process can be daunting for those who may not know how it works. I often times hear about the insane amount of junk mail and phone calls people get when they are first turning 65. There is a lot of information, misinformation and tons of people trying to sell you stuff. It’s easy to get confused when it comes to Medicare.

Most times after I meet with someone, they feel a sense of relief knowing they can ignore all that junk they’re being sent. They leave with a clear understanding of how the Medicare system works and what their options are to make sure they are properly covered through their most important years when it comes to their health and their wallets…retirement years.

It’s a good feeling when I meet a new client and witness the moment their face lights up because they finally understand their Medicare options. It’s like a weight off their shoulders.

So yes, the insurance industry may be boring, bland and you may think it’s just made up of a bunch of slick sales people but it means so much more to me than that. The experiences I’ve had throughout my life has given me a unique outlook on the possibilities to have financial success, continuing a legacy and most of all being helpful to others. I’ve been inspired to work in the family business.
